What A Year

Updated: Dec 23

When starting Reel Brum just over a year ago in a 90 capacity cinema we couldn't have even imagined how far we'd come so fast...

We've had an amazing year; the community is growing, industry is coming to Digbeth and connections are forming. We just want to recap a few of our achievements over the last year.

WE FUNDED OUR FIRST FILM

In our first few months we were able to raise £1800 from the small entrance fee at our monthly events, as well as a kind donation from First Look TV which we were able to offer to the community as our first film fund.  Inviting our growing community to apply for the fund, we received over 30 entries which made the choice really difficult, but ultimately we chose The Shelves produced by Cassie Smyth (the other one) and directed by Espen Johnson.

We couldn't be prouder of this comedy short, which has so far been selected for Flatpack Festival, Nottingham Film Festival, Greenwich Film Festival, This Funny Life Film Festival as well as winning Best International Sketch at Dublin International Comedy Film Festival.

HOSTED OUR OWN STRAND AT FLATPACK FESTIVAL

It has been an honour to screen West Midlands short films at Reel Brum every month, but even more so to have to the opportunity to showcase a selection of them as part of our own selection at Flatpack Festival.

To be able proudly show such a local programme already feels like a win.

FUNDS! FUNDS! FUNDS!

After being able to fund just one film, we wanted more! At our first birthday in September we announced our plans for four more film funds over the coming year: Open Door (deadline 13th January 2025), Mummy's Funny Brummies (funded by Joe Lycett and this beautiful jumper), The Trevor Beattie Film Fund and the Young Filmmaker Fund. We will fund a total of seven short films in 2025. Find out more

WE WON A RTS MIDLANDS AWARD

It took us by surprise, but a very welcome one! We were given Chair's Award for outstanding contributions to TV in the Midlands. Thank you to the RTS Midlands for the recognition and the ongoing support. We hope to continue to build on this in 2025!

AND BUILT THE BEST COMMUNITY IN THE MIDLANDS!

We have only had the year we've had because of the talented and passionate community we've built.

Ready for an even bigger 2025!

See you all on Monday 27th January - tickets released just after New Year.
